Tenant's Right to Quiet Enjoyment: Safety Concerns Because of Unwanted Visitors

Question:

I don’t feel safe because of people who are not tenants.

Response:

It’s tough when we don’t feel safe in our homes. This can come in different forms:

  • People who aren’t guests have access inside the building.
  • People who aren’t guests or authorized residents are camping out in the backyard.
  • Guests or other people seem to be doing funny business in the hallways, lobby, or basement.

If you’re worried because there are people who don’t live there causing trouble or making you feel unsafe, there are steps you can take to make things better.

  1. Contact the landlord. It’s okay to reach out to the landlord. They’re responsible for managing the place you live in, and they should know about any issues making you feel unsafe.
  2. But what if the landlord doesn’t do anything about it? You might want to consider calling the police. This step might seem a bit serious, but your safety is important and the police are there to help keep everyone safe.
