Understanding Lockout: Options after a Lockout

There are different options a tenant can take if they are experiencing an illegal lockout.

  • Send a demand letter to the landlord to stop the illegal lockout.
  • Send a written notice to the landlord that they intend to terminate the lease within 3 days of the lockout violation.
  • Call the police or 911. Ask the officer to direct the landlord to end the lockout. Notify them about Section 5-3-12-3, which says that the police have authority to arrest anybody who does an illegal lockout.
  • Call the local building department or township.
  • Call a legal aid attorney or other housing advocate.
  • Speak with an attorney and sue the landlord for damages.
