Understanding Lockout: Options after a Lockout
There are different options a tenant can take if they are experiencing an illegal lockout.
- Send a demand letter to the landlord to stop the illegal lockout.
- Terminate the lease by sending the landlord a written notice of the intent to terminate within 3 days of the lockout. Section 23.1811(A)(4).
- Call the police or 911. Ask the officer to direct the landlord to end the lockout.
- Call the local building department or township.
- Call a legal aid attorney or other housing advocate.
- Speak with an attorney and sue the landlord for damages. Section 23.1811(A)(3).
