Understanding The 2022 Cooling Ordinance: When Are Safe Indoor Conditions Required?

According to the 2022 Cooling Ordinance, when it gets hotter than 80°F, the shared indoor areas must be comfortable and safe for everyone.

Factors that determine what is considered "safe" indoor conditions include:

  • Air temperature
  • Sun exposure
  • Air speed
  • Activity level and age of tenants
  • Relative humidity

Safety conditions may be kept with both air conditioning systems and other tools, such as window shaded and fans.
