Subleases 101: Renting Your Apartment to Another Person

Sometimes tenants need to move out before their lease finishes. But what happens when that occurs? One option is to sublease (or sublet). A sublease is an agreement when a tenant rents their apartment to someone else (subtenant) for a certain period of time.

When a tenant subleases their unit, they don't get out of their lease. They are still on the hook. So, if a subtenant backs out before moving in, doesn't pay the rent, violates the lease, the tenant can be sued for money or evicted by the landlord.
