Understanding Tenant Rights: Conditions Issues in Evanston
The Law
A tenant has the right to demand repairs from the landlord. If something in the apartment is not working properly, or if there is something that needs to be fixed, a tenant has the right to ask their landlord to take care of it. But first, a tenant must figure out if their home is covered by the Evanston Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance
Which Law Applies
An important step for tenants is to figure out if their property is covered by the Evanston Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance. This Ordinance does not apply to the following tenants:
- Tenants who live in a hospital, nursing home, school, or church;
- Tenants living in rent-to-own homes;
- Tenants who live in a building used by a club or social organization;
- Tenants who live in a hotel or motel.
If the Evanston RLTO applies, use this link to read more about tenants' rights when the rental unit/home needs repairs.
If the Evanston RLTO does not apply, then general Illinois law applies. Visit our other article on the topic by using this link or the proper link at the bottom of the page.
