Understanding Tenant Rights: Rent Increase in Illinois
Generally speaking, landlords are allowed by state laws to charge any amount of rent they consider appropriate since there aren't any rent control policies in the state.
Landlords can increase the rent as much as they want. There is no maximum limit for rent increases in market-rate rental units.
On the other hand, landlords can raise rent prices whenever they consider it appropriate, as long as they do it after the lease ends.
- Month-to-month tenants must be given at least 30 days of notice.
- Week-to-week tenants must be given 7 days of notice.
However, tenants should contact your local units of government to see if their city or county has a rent control ordinance.
NOTE: Tenants in public or subsidized housing will be held to different rules and regulations.
