Understanding Tenant Rights: Conditions Issues in Illinois (Outside Cook County)
Landlord's Duty
Landlords have a legal responsibility when it comes to maintaining their rental property. If something goes wrong with the property, tenants have a right to contact their landlord and demand that the issue be fixed.
Which Law Applies
An important step for tenants is to figure out if the Illinois Residential Tenants' Right to Repair Act covers their property. The Right to Repair Act does not protect the following tenants:
- Public housing
- Condominiums
- Residential cooperative housing
- Commercial tenants
- Residences with six units or less, with the owner living in the property
- Mobile homes located in a mobile home park
- The tenant or tenant's guest caused the problem
